The percent of the community that discovered the SCP Foundation through word of mouth has gone down significantly with time, but the absolute number of responses has remained constant.

Much like with Containment Breach, TV Tropes is a former major recruiter to the community that has seen its influence wane. TV Tropes, which in 2009 was responsible for the first ever mass influx of users has fallen by about half from 2014 to 2017. We’ve essentially witnessed a passing of the torch. While SCP games did see an increase in the absolute number of responses, it has been greatly surpassed by YouTube as the most prominent recruiter to the SCP Foundation. The percent of the community that discovered the SCP Foundation through Containment Breach has been halved during the same time period. However, since 2014 the proportion of the community that discovered the Foundation through YouTube has skyrocketed while the influence of Containment Breach has diminished: the YouTube category surpassed SCP games as the most common means of discovery in 2016 and as of 2017 over a third of the community owes its knowledge of the SCP Foundation to a YouTube channel. In comparison, less than 4% of the community had discovered the SCP Foundation through YouTube.

In 2014, SCP games was the most common means of discovery, surpassing the second most common means by about 9%. In 2012 SCP Containment Breach was responsible for the largest ever mass influx of users in SCP history. The most interesting aspect of the graph though is the relationship between the SCP games and YouTube category. I think this demonstrates that the influence of 4chan on the SCP Foundation has essentially vanished with time, and that as a genre and community the Foundation has become less connected to the creepypasta community. This is fairly amazing when you consider that the SCP Foundation started out as creepypasta and that early on every member of the community was a 4chan user. Even in 2014, the percent of the community that discovered the SCP Foundation through one of these two sources was less than 20%.

The percent of the community that discovered the SCP Foundation through creepypasta websites or boards such as /X/ has been halved since 2014. With this overview out of the way, let’s do some analysis!

This means that the proportion of the community that reported discovering the SCP Foundation through Reddit decreased by around half from 2014 to 2015. For example, in 2014 the green line (Reddit) was near 10% and in 2015 it was nearly 5%. To be more specific, the attached line chart illustrates how the proportion of the community that discovered the SCP Foundation through eight different sources changed from 2014 to 2017. The 2017 community survey came out, so out of sheer boredom I decided to chart out how members of the community discovered the SCP Foundation from 2014 to 2017.
